Tips: 4 Approach To Architecture Design

4 method for design conceptualization

The common problem right after every project brief back in my studying days are where should I begin? or at times after the design was created - how could I explain it? What are the basis for this design?. Over the years, I've discovered several approaches to design. Here are the breakdown summary in each of these approaches *(You could view it in a slide format available here).

How to Generate Architectural Concepts & Design Ideas

_
You can read an article about the breakdown of this tip here.

*Originally the slides was called 'Let's stop using the word Concept', however for this slides - I'm reserving my opinions towards 'the concept approach' for a broader general view towards the design approach.

** The first version of the slides was presented in Studio 2, Uitm, Shah Alam, 2008.

Expressionless beautiful patterns

An interesting discussion over BBC that ended too early, it's only touching the tip of the surface.

Foam #2

This is a final posting for student models works series in 'Learning from Modular.' We have covered materials such as polymer and wood. What I didn't preview are two more group work of materials using rubber and steels. Both will be featured in a larger 1:1 scale in the future posting.

31.10.09

Foam #1

I was looking for a term to re-introducing the continuation of the previous posting of my students works and their experiments of creating modular using basic materials. In this case the keyword of the material are Foam.

Mind you that there seems to be a slight difference in between foam, a silicone foam and sponge foam.

An example of a work using sponge foam.
_
For this work, the intertwining in between two sponge creates a cell which eventually can be expended into a larger bodies of cell. This idea later on will be continued into a larger 1:1 scale (with several alteration & improvisation).

12.10.09

Polymer

A continuation of selected students works from the LeModular exercise (learning from modular).

2.10.09

wood#2

The final selected student work under the wood category.

OK, here is a question regarding this work. How do we rate such an idea if it doesn't clearly 'show' a cell? and it doesn't abide to the requirement rule of - no usage of glues in any part of the model?

The student clearly understood the brief and challenged it. The cell are made of standard pieces of thin shredded balsa wood, joined together using water and molded onto the bottom of a bowl.

Now that's challenging 'the project brief'. As a tutor, we always get excited whenever we encounter such works. More work from other material group in the coming post.

stay tune.

LeModular

The festive season of Syawal have finally soothe in, everything is back to normal. I finally have a chance to sit down and sort through a studio project that we have initiated for the past several month. I'll be posting more on the selected work by the students in a couple of days.

The approach for this project is utilizing several basic group materials ranging from wood, steel, plastic, foam and rubber. Students are challenged to explore a selected material and generates a variation of components of a building block (a cell). This cell must also be able to be interlocked with another similar cell to formed an organ.

The goal from this exercise is to create a 1:1 scale of a portable shelter that will be constructed by the students using the similar material based on the selected model.

Design Process (part 2)

A summary upon the research of the architectural design process:

Making mistake is part of a process.
Mistakes is not just part of the design process but also a stepping stone in formulating the solution of a design problem, it is also apart of a design method.

There is no one ultimate approach of design process.
What I've just ventured were merely a tip of the design process 'iceberg'. There is a whole universe of studies and research regarding the design process which not only subjected to the architectural fields but beyond the realm of various the design fields and profession.

There is one commonality.
What I've discovered are one similarity in each various types of design process: The earliest stage of each design process @ briefing stage.
This is where a project and various task is assigned to the designer. Also, during this stage, requirements, obstacles and goals are being specified and analyze. Most designers prefers to know their boundaries in terms of design constraints.

Its how we think.
Design represents a glimpse of a systematic 'humanistic' ways of thinking in terms of perceiving a situation towards the design problems, overcoming the challenge and generating ideas and solutions. Each visualize steps and stages is like a map of the thinking process behind the design consideration, justifications, solutions and thoughts.

Conclusion,

I would like to conclude this research with a questions. If a process could help us to have a better understanding towards a solution and steps taken by the designer, could it also be implies into our very own life? An autobiographical documentation is one of an example of a documented process, the growth and development either could be imply to a person, a design or sometimes both. If its possible, could our life also interrelated with the rest of the design process criteria?

For example, in terms of making mistakes?...
