I've visited Jonker Walk with my fellow colleagues and students in searched for
potential sites for their upcoming design studio project. The
surrounding area of Jonker Streets have been gazetted as one of the
UNESCO's World Heritage Historical sites. We've ventured the entire area and this is what I personally discovered of things that I
never knew or noticed (despite after several visits of my own), which I
have categorized under 7 keywords to express these foundings.

• It Is... Distinctive
Strolling along the entire area, I've notice a strong unique personalization and demarcation for doors, gates and entryways, whether it's facing towards the main road or hidden within the shophouses backlanes.

To quote a dialogue by Ricky Fitts from the movie - American Beauty. Ricky says, "Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world, I feel like I can't take it".
Well Ricky, perhaps this museum could help you. Museum of Enduring Beauty - located in Jalan Kota |

Several interesting signage's that I've came across with. Top Left: A sign in front of a temple in Jalan Tukang Besi • To Right: NOTICE According to the Ordinance of Building & Town Planning, This Tree must not be destroyed under any conditions • Bottom Left: (A sign on a 100 years old tree) Taking shelter in here is under your very own responsibility • Bottom Right: A sign on a fortune teller shop in Lorong Jambatan (sadly it was closed). |

The surrounding area have a strong presence of history, many remains hidden underneath the current city of Melaka. New excavation upon several sites have began to revealed many genuine artifacts and ruins of the past. Who knows what lies beneath if we decided to dig deeper.
Not the best picture to be used for this category. Really tempted to moved this picture under the 'Oddity' category |

A different view of the Jonker Walk area. The roofscapes are amazing.

Specialized & custom-made shops of ironmongers can still be find throughout the entire area. An Ironmonger shop located in Lorong Jambatan |
To be concluded with an open ending. There is more to this historical area that are yet to be discovered. Perhaps in another post of another trip.

Assalamualaikum..
ReplyDeleteReferring to "the Ordinance of Building & Town Planning",
I think the right term is Town and Country Planning Act (Act 172) Amendment 1995. Because I have learned about this act as it is part of my syllabus.. :)
Well, I'm Impiana Mayana/Nad. It's nice to read your awesome blog. I like the design. It portrays your distinctive identity as an architecture student. :)
Waalaikumusalam :)
ReplyDeleteHi, Nad. Thanks for the correction (Can't really see that part of the signage). And thank you so much for tuning in to Asasku Blog. :)
Other than running the small homestudio, I'm also lecturing architecture (but yes, I will always be a student at heart).
Are you studying town planning or architecture related?
I'm a 2nd year bach. student of urban & regional planning in KAED, IIUM. That's why I know about that Act 172.
ReplyDeleteI was fond with architectural thing but I know my ability in designing and drawing is not really good so I took town planning as my interest for now. :)
Town planning is ok, the important part is the interest in what we do.. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors. Happy New Year & keep tuning in to Asasku :)
